Psi Chi Old News
September 16, 2008: Psych GRE Prep Session
Students gathered in Chandler Hall to hear valuable information about the GRE Psychology Subject
Test from Dr. Erchull. Concerns about the test were mollified and questions were answered from who
needs to take the test to how they should study for it. A practice test handout was used to model
practice test-taking strategies.
September 23, 2008: Graduate School Forum
Psi Chi's annual Graduate School Forum went off without a hitch. Students pitched questions to a
panel of UMW professors including Dr. Erchull, Dr. Handley, Dr. Kolar, Dr. Macintosh, and Dr. Rettinger.
Topics included the GRE, admissions, and field specific questions. Free pizza and drinks were
provided by the chapter and were enjoyed by all who attended.
Fall 2008 All-Member Meetings
All-Member meetings were held to inform members about the many projects we have planned for this year.
Members learned about the points system, in which they can receive their honor cord or a free
t-shirt for free by becoming an active member of the chapter. Psi Chi officers encouraged ideas for
fundraising and service projects. Members also gathered to help plan inductions and practice the
Platonic Myth. Psi Chi officers also informed members of the many opportunities that they have to get
involved in Psi Chi this year, including an upcoming drive for the ASPCA, GRE prep sessions, and
career forum.
October 7th, 2008: Inductions
We held our bi-annual induction ceremony to honor and induct the newest members of Psi Chi.
Dr. Virginia Macintosh, the newest faculty member spoke about "what she learned in prison".
There was a small reception afterwards for old and new members as well as the faculty.
Fall Service Project
In November, we held a drive for the SPCA and collected items such as cat food,
kitty litter, and cleaning supplies as well as monetary donations. The drive was a
big success and the SPCA was very thankful for our efforts.
Personal Statement and C/V Writing Workshops
These two workshops were a new addition to our programming this year and were
well-attended by anxious students applying to graduate school. Dr. Erchull shared
her wealth of knowledge on writing personal statements and what exactly to put in
your C/V. She also provided general advice about applying to graduate school.
